Babylon is a village in Suffolk County, NY. It is part suburban bedroom community, part small-town, and has a substantial shopping and business district.

About Babylon

The village of Babylon has a population of 218,223 and is the most densely populated town in Suffolk County.  Its location is approximately 25 miles from New York City at the Queens border, and approximately 33 miles from Manhattan. Today the village is best known for its restaurants and shops, and hosts shopping events during the fall as well as a popular crafts fair. The town consists of three villages; Amityville, in the southwestern part of the town, Babylon, in the southeaster section of the town, and Lindenhurst, in the southern part of the town.

History

The region was once called Huntington South. Nathaniel Conklin moved his family to the area, and around 1803 named it New Babylon, after the ancient city of Babylon. The town was officially formed in 1872 by a partition of the Town of Huntington.
